Ignored Australia batter Sam Konstas sent a strong message to the selectors by hitting a sensational century for New South Wales (NSW) in Sheffield Shield. He played a fine knock of 116 runs against Queensland as NSW finished off the opening day of the game on a strong note.
The 20-year-old opened the innings for the side alongside Matthew Gilkes. The duo formed a strong opening stand, putting the opposing bowlers on the back-foot. Both the batters played several remarkable shots and went on to bring up their half-centuries. The 112-run partnership would be finally broken by pacer Gurinder Sandhu, who got rid of Gilkes for 55.
Konstas and Patterson pile on runs
However, the wicket didn't stop Konstas from continuing to punish the opposing bowlers. He then went on to form a massive partnership alongside Kurtis Patterson as NSW got close to the 250-run mark. Konstas would go on to bring up a fine century, sending a clear-cut message of intent to the national team selectors. The batter was not included in Australia's squad for both the first and second Ashes Tests after his poor display at the domestic circuit. But, he may get a place in the team if he continues performing like this.
Konstas would eventually be dismissed for 116 by Tom Whitney while Patterson would depart for 63 as NSW wrapped up the first day on 313/4. After the conclusion of the day, Konstas shared how important the knock was for him especially after having a few tough weeks. He further said that he has been training very hard with NSW coach Greg Shipperd and mentor Shane Watson.
"It was very rewarding. Especially the last few weeks, had it a bit tough here, but been working really hard as a group and got great support from our coaches," Konstas told reporters after the match.
"I've been training really hard with Shippy [NSW coach Greg Shipperd], my mentor Shane Watson, and just having clarity and continuing to learn my game. It's been a great learning curve at my age. I'm very lucky to have great support in my inner group," he added.
Konstas needs more of these performances
With Jake Weatherald having a phenomenal start to the Ashes series, it is highly important for Konstas to continue to pile on runs in domestic cricket if he wants to make a comeback into the Australian Test team.
