Former Indian skipper’s signature offside drives and advancing down the track shots were on display but it was Jay Shah who stole the show with his spin bowling in an exhibition match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata between BCCI President’s XI and Jay Shah’s Secretary’s XI. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay’s team won the exhibition 15-overs per side game by a narrow margin of one run.
The game was played on the eve of the apex Indian board’s Annual General Meeting. Unlike his playing day, Ganguly arrived at the crease to play the role of finisher at no.6. In his 20-ball 35, the southpaw hit two sixes and four boundaries. However, the ‘God of offside’ had to retire as per the rules of the match.
Defending a total of 128, Jay bowled a total of seven overs, conceded 58 runs and took three wickets. His first wicket was of India’s legendary batter Mohammad Azharuddin as he got out leg before wicket for a score of two runs. The 33-year-old also took the wickets of Goa Cricket Association’s Suraj Lotilar and Cricket Association of Bengal President Avishek Dalmiya.
Earlier, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal and Jaydev Shah shared a 92-run partnership which helped Jay Shah’s Secretary’s XI post a total of 128 for three wickets in 15 overs. Dhumal scored 36 runs whereas Jaydev top-scored with 40.
The responsibility of the new ball was in the hands of former all-rounder Ganguly and part-time bowler Azharuddin as they bowled three and two overs respectively. Ganguly took one wicket and conceded 19 runs in his three overs whereas Azharuddin remained wicketless in two overs he bowled and conceded just eight runs.
