Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa showed no mercy to Michael Clarke and blamed him for the release of the video where Harbhajan Singh is seen slapping S Sreesanth. The clip is from the inaugural season of IPL and has received a lot of attention ever since it was released. The incident still remains as one of the biggest controversies in the tournament's history and Harbhajan has expressed his regret about it multiple times already.
The slapgate video was released by former IPL chairman Lalit Modi during an interview with Clarke. The two have since come under a lot of scrutiny with Harbhajan himself calling them out and Sreesanth's wife labelling the act of releasing the video as disgraceful.
Uthappa questioned if Clarke had any sensitivity or empathy left in him and was furious over the fact that the clip was released just for the sake of views and attention.
“That whole Slaggate thing that happened in the IPL. What the f*** man? How does someone get away with stuff like that? Now, imagine we put up a clip of something that an Australian did that was offensive, that was kept under wraps for the respect of that whole situation, to save the respect of that situation, which is an impulsive, bad decision that a human being made. Now that you have gone and interviewed someone, and you have got access to the file, do you think you have the right to publish it, put that into the world, and make those two people go through that whole emotion, that raw emotion, 20 years later?' Uthappa said on the Kim-Appa show with Jarrod Kimber.
“Where is your sense of sensitivity and empathy for other people? We all make mistakes, but are we going to keep putting it out there to make people go through the embarrassment of the wrong choices the person has made? For me, it’s guys who aren’t brown skinned who get away with it a lot more. Today, we are speaking about Sunny G having an opinion on what other countries speak about Indian cricket. But what about this? Imagine the human implications of this. You can’t treat people like crap just because it’ll get you more views," he added.
Harbhajan's reaction to the video release
Meanwhile, Harbhajan also criticized both Modi and Clarke for release of the slapgate video and remarked that the two must have a 'selfish motive' behind it. He further stated that people have long forgotten about the incident so there was no need to release the clip.
“The way the video has been leaked, it's wrong. It shouldn't have happened. They might have a selfish motive behind it. Something that happened 18 years ago, people have forgotten, and they are reminding people about it. I feel bad for whatever happened. We were playing, and everyone had things going on in their mind. Mistakes happened, and we do feel ashamed about it,” Harbhajan told Instant Bollywood.
