MS Dhoni can be retained as an uncapped player for Rs 4 crore by CSK.

Dhoni will meet CSK officials in Mumbai this month.

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni is yet to announce whether he will hang his boots or return to play another Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The IPL 2024 was speculated to be Dhoni’s last dance but he hasn’t made any announcement in the last few months. Recently, the rules of retentions were tweaked too which allow Dhoni to play as uncapped player as he hasn’t played international cricket since 2019 ODI World Cup semifinal. Even CSK officials don’t know about Dhoni’s answer yet but an announcement is imminent ahead of the deadline to reveal the retentions.

As per a report by Cricbuzz, Dhoni will meet the CSK officials in Mumbai mid-October to tell them about his decision. Dhoni has struggled with his knee and often strapped it during or after the game.

CSK can retain Dhoni for as low as Rs 4 crore as he is now classified as an uncapped player. All franchises have to announce their list of retentions by October 31.

On the other hand, there are three categories for capped players. The highest is Rs 18 crore followed by Rs 14 crore and Rs 11 crore. In addition, a player will get Rs 7.5 lakh match fee per match starting IPL 2025.

Dhoni’s batting numbers in IPL 2024

The 43-year-old had a good run as the team's finisher in the previous season. He scored 161 runs from 11 innings at a stupendous strike rate of 220.54. He was dismissed only thrice in the tournament. He went on to hit 13 sixes, his best since the 2019 edition of the tournament.

Kaif feels rules have been changed for Dhoni

Dhon’s former teammate Mohammad Kaif feels that the legendary wicketkeeper-batter should continue to play till he wants to. Also, the rules have been tweaked for him ahead of the retentions and mega auction.

"You will get the chance to see MS Dhoni again. He is fit, batting at a strike rate of 200, keeping well, and that is why I believe the rules will keep changing till he wants to play. If he wants to play in the IPL, he will play. He is such a big player, such a big match-winner, and has been a leader for CSK," said Kaif on Star Sports.

"I believe the rule has been changed rightly. I believe if he is fit and playing well, why not, change the rule and let him play. Everyone knows the rule has been changed for Dhoni sahab, and why not, you will want to change the rule for a player like Dhoni," he added.
