Shree Charani breaks ex-India spinner's T20 World Cup record, may end up creating all-time record before semifinals

In the next two games, Shree Charani may end up breaking the record for most wickets by a bowler in single edition of ICC Women's T20 World Cup.

India's young left-arm spinner, Shree Charani, has been in phenomenal form in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026. With a three-fer in a losing cause against South Africa, she broke former leg-spinner Poonam Yadav’s record for most wickets by an Indian bowler in a single-edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

In the ongoing edition, Shree has already taken 10 wickets from three games, averaging 6.40. Her economy rate is 5.33 runs per over.

The previous record belonged to Poonam who bagged 10 wickets from five games, averaging 11.90, including a fifer.

With two more games left in the group stage, Shree has a chance to taking the second spot or breaking the all-time record altogether. The record belongs to New Zealand's current captain Amelia Kerr. The White Ferns all-rounder claimed 15 wickets from six games, averaging 7.33 in the previous edition of the tournament on UAE soil. New Zealand also won their first ever ICC Women's T20 World Cup.

Shree Charani’s performances in T20 World Cup so far

Against South Africa, she conceded 24 runs from her quota of four overs including a maiden. She bagged the wickets of Laura Wolvaardt, Annerie Dercksen and Nadine de Klerk. The 21-year-old would’ve got more wickets had it not been for the dropped catches. India ended up losing the match by six wickets as Marizanne Kapp scored an unbeaten 81. 

In the match against Netherlands, she registered her T20I career's second four-wicket haul. Before that, in her maiden T20 World Cup appearance, she got three wickets for 21 runs, supporting senior player Deepti Sharma who bagged a fifer.

Shree Charani’s next chances

The young spinner’s performances will be crucial going ahead in the tournament. In the next match, India face Bangladesh at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, on June 25. Harmanpreet Kaur-led side's last group stage match is against the mighty Australians led by Sophie Molineux. The high voltage clash will take place at Lord's, London, on June 28.

Shree is yet to play a T20I against Bangladesh but she played a T20I series against Australia. From three games, she has five wickets, averaging 14.80 against Australia.
