A controversial VAR decision involving Vinicius Jr has become the center of the post-match dispute.

Brazil may have comfortably defeated Scotland 3-0 to seal qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32, but the result has been overshadowed by a major refereeing controversy. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has reportedly lodged a formal complaint with FIFA, demanding disciplinary action against the match official following a contentious VAR decision.

The controversy centers around a disallowed goal from Vinicius Jr, with Brazilian officials arguing that the intervention was inconsistent and unjustified despite the team's convincing victory.

Brazil unhappy over disallowed Vinicius Jr goal

The incident occurred midway through the first half after Vinicius Jr appeared to have doubled Brazil's advantage. The Real Madrid forward capitalized on a defensive error before calmly finding the back of the net, with referee Cesar Ramos initially awarding the goal.

However, following a VAR review, the strike was ruled out for an alleged foul during the buildup, a decision that sparked immediate protests from the Brazilian bench.

Brazil's coaching staff and players believed the contact did not warrant overturning the on-field decision, arguing that the intervention failed to meet the standard required for video review.

CBF reportedly files complaint with FIFA

According to reports, the CBF has escalated the matter by submitting a formal complaint to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, questioning both the consistency of officiating during the tournament and the appointment of Mexican referee Cesar Ramos.

The federation has reportedly requested that Ramos no longer officiate Brazil's matches in future competitions, citing what it considers a history of controversial decisions involving the Selecao.

Brazilian officials also referred to their meeting with Switzerland at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where they believed key refereeing decisions similarly went against them under Ramos' supervision.

Despite the off-field controversy, Brazil finished the group stage strongly and advanced to the knockout rounds as one of the tournament favorites. Vinicius Jr continued his outstanding campaign by scoring twice in the match, strengthening his position in the race for the Golden Boot.

The CBF's latest move now shifts attention away from Brazil's on-field success and toward FIFA's response to one of the tournament's biggest officiating disputes so far.
