Gareth Southgate could be set for a return to international management nearly two years after stepping down as England boss. However, despite growing criticism surrounding Thomas Tuchel following England's FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final exit, the former Three Lions manager is not expected to replace the German at the helm.

Instead, reports suggest Southgate has emerged as a leading candidate for another high-profile international job, while the Football Association (FA) continues to back Tuchel despite England's heartbreaking elimination against Argentina.

Thomas Tuchel set to continue as England manager
England's hopes of reaching their first FIFA World Cup final since 1966 came to an end after a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals. The Three Lions looked on course for victory after Anthony Gordon's second-half opener before late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez completed Argentina's comeback.
Tuchel has faced heavy criticism for his tactical approach after England took the lead, with many questioning his decision to switch to a defensive five-man backline instead of pushing for a second goal.
Despite the backlash and calls from sections of supporters for his dismissal, reports indicate that the FA has no plans to sack Tuchel. The governing body remains committed to the 52-year-old, who was appointed England manager in January 2025.
Thomas Tuchel also reaffirmed his desire to remain in charge and continue building the team ahead of UEFA Euro 2028, making it clear that he has no intention of stepping down.
According to reports, Tuchel said he is "100%" committed to the role and believes there is still plenty of room for improvement after England's World Cup campaign.
Gareth Southgate linked with United States job
While Tuchel appears set to continue with England, Southgate is reportedly being lined up for his first managerial assignment since leaving the Three Lions.
The former England boss has been tipped as a strong contender to succeed Mauricio Pochettino as the United States men's national team manager. Pochettino's future has come under scrutiny after the USA's disappointing Round of 16 exit at the FIFA World Cup, where they suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Belgium.
With Pochettino's contract expiring this summer and the Argentine also attracting interest from club football, the United States Soccer Federation is believed to be exploring potential replacements.
Southgate's extensive international experience has made him one of the leading names under consideration. During his eight-year spell with England, he guided the team to two European Championship finals and a FIFA World Cup semi-final, establishing himself as one of the country's most successful modern-day managers.

For now, however, any hopes of a dramatic England reunion appear unlikely, with the FA continuing to place its faith in Thomas Tuchel despite the disappointment of another major tournament exit.
