Veteran Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was substituted at half-time during his side’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Group H match against Spain on Saturday, after another costly error handed the European champions a 1-0 lead.

Alex Baena opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when Muslera failed to deal cleanly with his shot, allowing the ball to squirm into the net. The blunder marked the 40-year-old’s third significant mistake of the tournament, continuing a worrying trend that has raised questions about his form in what could be his fifth and final World Cup.

Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa wasted no time in making the ruthless change, replacing Muslera with Sergio Rochet for the second half as the Celeste looked to mount a comeback against a strong Spain side.

Muslera, a national legend with over 130 caps and a record number of World Cup appearances for Uruguay, had started the group stage but faced criticism following earlier errors, including one that contributed to a draw against Cape Verde.

At half-time, Spain led 1-0, leaving Uruguay in a precarious position in Group H and needing a strong response to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive. The match highlighted the unforgiving nature of top-level football, where even the most experienced players can face sudden scrutiny.
