The Liverpool's captain Virgil van Dijk put pen to paper on the deal to ensure his association with the Reds continues in the near future as well. It comes as a huge boost for the Reds as Mohamed Salah recently signed his contract extension followed by van Dijk's move.

What did Virgil van Dijk say after signing his contract extension?

After scoring the winning goal against West Ham United on Sunday, April 13, Virgil van Dijk has committed his future to a club where he has spent seven and a half years.

I’m very happy, very proud, Van Dijk told Liverpoolfc.com in exclusive reaction. There are so many emotions obviously that go through my head right now speaking about it.

It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible. The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy.

It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool. There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling, van Dijk concluded.

The defender made his move to Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 and he quickly established himself as one of the finest defenders in world football.

His defensive prowess has seen the team lift some major trophies during his time as he has 314 appearances and 27 goals to his name. The trophy cabinet consists of Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups.

Not just this, he was even awarded the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2019 and has been selected in the organisation’s Premier League Team of the Year on four separate occasions. He came very close of lifting the Ballon d'Or in 2019 as he came second behind Lionel Messi.

He has taken over the captaincy duties after Jordan Henderson departed from the club in 2023. He will continue to lead Liverpool until 2027 and help them achieve many more trophies. Currently, they are eyeing the ongoing Premier League title as they lead the table with 76 points.
