The football world continues to buzz with speculation about Lionel Messi’s potential farewell on the grandest stage—the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The legendary forward, who inspired Argentina to their third World Cup title in Qatar 2022, could be eyeing one final shot at glory before hanging up his boots.
Messi’s 2026 World Cup Participation Still Uncertain
Since leading Argentina to World Cup glory, Messi’s future with the national team has been a hot topic. Now playing for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), the 36-year-old has adapted impressively to life in the United States. However, whether he’ll take part in the next World Cup remains unanswered.
The 2026 edition, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, could see Messi feature at the age of 39. While the idea of him playing at that age seems ambitious, those close to the Argentine icon believe he’s not done yet.
Luis Suarez Sheds Light on Messi's Future
Messi's long-time friend and current Inter Miami teammate, Luis Suarez, recently shared insights into the Argentine's mindset when it comes to retirement. Speaking to Ovacion, Suarez said:
“Retirement? Leo Messi has that desire to play at the World Cup 2026 with Argentina.”
He further added:
“Messi and I talked about retirement in a joking tone, but he's really looking forward to playing in next year's World Cup. It's hard to talk about a deadline, about an end. A football player has to prepare because he's not ready yet.”
Suarez’s comments suggest that Messi’s competitive fire is still very much alive, and while nothing is set in stone, the dream of leading Argentina once again remains a goal for the legendary playmaker.
Strong Start to 2025 MLS Season
After leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, Messi made a historic move to Inter Miami and within a year became the face of MLS. He led the club to win the Supporters’ Shield last season, unfortunately, that was not enough to aid the team on to playoff glory.
So far this season, Messi has scored eight times in just ten matches and is clearly unstoppable. He has helped push his club Inter Miami to fourth place in the Eastern Conference and solidly within the playoff race.
Inter Miami Contract Extension in the Making
Reports are now suggesting Messi might be on the brink of an extension in the MLS as retirement talks continue around him. His contract with the current club is set to expire after the end of the ongoing season, but co-owner of the club Jorge Mas shed some light on the likelihood of him signing an extension and that the Argentine has a desire to keep on living his adventure in Miami.
