In the lead-up to the ODI World Cup, former England captain Michael Atherton made a noteworthy prediction. Speaking on Sky Sports, Atherton believes that, for the first time in World Cup history, Pakistan will triumph over India, breaking a long-standing streak.

The cricketing face-off between India and Pakistan, often dubbed the "El Clásico" of the cricketing world, boasts one of the fiercest rivalries in international sports. Historically, during the ICC ODI World Cup clashes, the two teams have gone head-to-head seven times. In all these encounters, India has upheld an undefeated record against Pakistan, a feat that resonates with fans worldwide. The series of victories began with India's commendable 43-run win, setting the tone for future encounters. Fast forward to the 2019 World Cup, and India sustained this dominance, defeating Pakistan by 18 runs.
Their recent face-off in the Asia Cup had mixed results, with the initial match ending inconclusively due to weather conditions. However, during the Super 4 stage, India clinched a decisive victory.
The anticipation is palpable as India and Pakistan prepare to reignite their rivalry in Ahmedabad on October 14. Amidst this fervor, Atherton's prediction that Pakistan might clinch their inaugural World Cup victory against India adds an extra layer of intrigue. He emphasized that the upcoming clash will arguably be the highlight of this year's World Cup, unless the two giants meet again in the finals or semi-finals.
"As my bold prediction, I'm saying that for the first time in a 50-over World Cup Pakistan will beat India. They have won zero out of seven over the years. It's going to be the biggest game of the tournament, unless they meet again in a semi-final or, could you imagine, the final. It is sure to be a packed house; it will be mayhem and maybe Pakistan will jump a surprise," said Atherton.
While Pakistan will kickstart their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on October 6, India is gearing up to face Australia in Chennai two days later.
In essence, with predictions hinting at possible upsets and both teams in top form, this year's ODI World Cup promises thrilling action, especially when the cricketing titans, India and Pakistan, clash on the field.
