As if failing to qualify for Super 12 stage of T20 World Cup 2021 was not enough, Netherlands got bundled out for the second-lowest total in the history of the tournament. Sri Lankan bowlers bundled out Netherlands for 44 in their last Group A match. Interestingly, the record for lowest total in T20 World Cup also belongs to the Dutch. It was almost a déjà vu moment as they were bundled out for 39 by Sri Lanka in 2014 edition of the tournament.

Netherlands batters’ innings ended in just 10 overs which is the lowest balls faced by a team to bundle out. Overall in T20I cricket, this is the sixth-lowest total. The record is held by Turkey, who were reduced to 21 in 8.3 overs by Czech Republic in 2019.

Only one of the Dutch batters managed a double-digit score. Colin Ackermann scored 11 runs from nine deliveries and hit the only six in the innings. For Sri Lanka, fast bowler Lahiru Kumara and right-arm leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga picked up three wickets each. Off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana took two wickets whereas Dushmantha Chameera picked up one.

Pieter Seelar-led Netherlands had a forgettable tournament as they failed to win a single match in round 1 and finished at the bottom of Group A. From their group, Sri Lanka and Namibia have progressed to the Super 12 stage.

In reply, Sri Lanka chased down the small target of 45 in 7.1 overs to register their third win on the trot. They lost two wickets but the target was too small for the Dutch bowlers to make a game out of it. Kusal Perera did the bulk of scoring with unbeaten 33 off 24 balls.
