Sourav Ganguly lauds Shubman Gill for his record-breaking 269 in Edgbaston Test, says 'one of the best innings I have seen in England in any era'

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly lavished praise on Shubman Gill for his 269-run knock against England in the second Test match of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy 2025. Gill, captaining India in only his second Test match, put in a flawless performance in Birmingham.

The 25-year-old batter scored  269 runs off 387 balls, which is the highest ever by an Indian captain in England. His knock included 30 boundaries and 3 sixes, in what turned out to be his career-best outing in Test cricket. After the day's play, Sourav Ganguly heaped praise on Gill, stating that this was the best innings he has ever seen in England.

"An absolute masterclass from Gill... just flawless... one of the best innings I have seen in England in any era. So much improvement in the last few months. Probably, opening was not his place in Test cricket. A Test to win for India," Ganguly posted.

Shubman Gill's hard-hitting knock helped India to post a mammoth total of 587 runs in the first innings in Birmingham. In reply to India's mammoth 587 runs, England lost early wickets as Mohammed Shami and Akash Deep got the breakthroughs.  The duo bowled in tandem and removed Ben Duckett (0), Ollie Pope (0) and Zak Crawley (19) within the blink of an eye. Joe Root and Harry Brook tried to shift the momentum of the game by stitching an unbeaten 52-run stand to propel England to 77/3 at the end of a pulsating day.
