It was not a good day at the office for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bowlers. Mohammed Siraj, who has been in tremendous form in this Indian Premier League (IPL) season, was taken to the cleaners by Delhi Capitals’ (DC) English opener Phil Salt. Mohammed Siraj did not like getting hit for sixes off consecutive deliveries as he got into a heated exchange with Salt.
The incident took place in the fifth over of the innings. Salt was on song and had a stroke of luck as well. First ball, a top-edge landed in the stands. On the second ball, he read Siraj's change of pace and hit him for a six. On third ball, he was in total control with a boundary towards mid-wicket while advancing down the track.
On the fourth ball, Mohammed Siraj bowls a short ball. Salt backed away from the pull and then asked for a wide from leg umpire which was signalled. Siraj did not like it and had an argument with Salt. David Warner intervened to diffuse the situation and Siraj told Salt to 'shush'. The on-field umpire and RCB skipper Faf du Plessis tried to calm Mohammed Siraj down. The RCB pacer conceded just two runs off the remaining deliveries in his second over.
While the video of the argument has been making rounds on social media, the two players hugged each other after DC’s dominating batting display that helped them win by seven wickets with 20 balls to spare in the run chase of 182 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
Salt went on to score 87 runs from 45 deliveries. His match-winning knock was studded with eight fours and six sixes.
“I spoke before the game about being positive. We knew the wicket was slow and low, and we spoke about playing off the backfoot. I thought 180 was par, I felt we would have to bat really well to get there,” Salt said as he was adjudged ‘Player of the match’ award.
After the win, DC skipper Warner also revealed that they had planned to take on Mohammed Siraj from the start.
“Our intention was to take on Mohammed Siraj, he's been bowling well and taking wickets early. His wickets have been bowled or LBW so we wanted to drag his length back,” Warner said.
