Rohit Sharma suffered a hamstring injury during RCB vs MI clash

The extent of the injury was such that Rohit had to walk out of the field amidst the key chase

Rohit Sharma is all set to to miss Mumbai Indians’ (MI) upcoming IPL 2026 fixture against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Wankhede Stadium on April 16. The former captain is sidelined with a hamstring injury, which he picked up during the team's previous outing against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Rohit Sharma ruled out of MI vs PBKS clash

On being asked about Rohit Sharma's injury update, MI's star batter Naman Dhir, during the pre-match press conference, said:

"Medical team is assessing him and will get to know as and when we have an update"

Going by Dhir's statement, it looks like Rohit will not be fit in time for the clash. The injury occurred during the second innings of the RCB match, forcing Rohit to retire hurt in just the sixth over of the chase. His premature exit proved costly, as Mumbai's batting order struggled in his absence, eventually falling to their third defeat in just four games this season.

Losing Rohit will undoubtedly be a huge blow for the Paltans, as the former MI captain has been in fine form, accumulating 137 runs at an impressive average of 45.67 and a blistering strike rate of 165.06. To fill the void at the top of the order, the management may turn to Quinton de Kock as a direct replacement.

Will Naman Dhir open the innings for MI in Rohit's absence?

When quizzed about the possibility of opening the batting against PBKS in light of Rohit's injury, Dhir clarified that he hasn't received any specific instructions from the management yet.

"I haven't been told anything about it. I am absolutely ready to bat anywhere. Even last year, I have batted up the order, sometimes at 5 or 7. The management will take a call and we will get to know tomorrow only," Dhir added.

Mumbai Indians' dismal outing in IPL 2026

Hardik Pandya's brigade are currently weathering a difficult period, finding themselves languishing in ninth place on the IPL 2026 points table. While they opened their campaign with an encouraging victory over KKR, that early momentum has since vanished. The team is now reeling from a three-game losing streak, having suffered consecutive defeats at the hands of the Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. With only one win from four starts, the pressure is mounting on the squad to turn their fortunes around and secure a vital win in front of their home supporters at the Wankhede.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer-led PBKS have emerged as one of the standout teams of the season so far, firmly holding second place in the standings. With three wins from their first four matches, they are dominating the tournament by all means.
