Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) camp was struck by a wave of anxiety during the Mumbai Indians' (MI) run-chase at Wankhede Stadium as superstar batter Virat Kohli was forced to leave the field.
Virat Kohli gives RCB massive injury scare
Commentator and former New Zealand international Simon Doull provided an immediate update on the situation, noting that Kohli appeared to be struggling with a concerning ankle injury. The veteran was later seen receiving treatment in the dressing room, casting a shadow over what should have been a celebratory atmosphere for the defending champions. Earlier in the evening, Kohli managed to notch a half-century, though it was a uncharacteristically labored performance. Finishing with 50 runs off 38 balls at a strike rate of 131.57, the right-hander seemed to lack his typical timing and explosive power, often appearing frustrated after missing out on scoring opportunities. Despite these struggles, his presence at the crease remained vital, as he anchored the innings with five boundaries and a lone six to set up a competitive total. RCB ended up posting a colossal total of 240/4. In reply, MI did put up a strong fight but were eventually restricted for 225/5 to lose the match by 18 runs.

Kohli's role has been pivotal for RCB this season; he has masterfully balanced his game to act as the team's stabilizer, allowing more aggressive partners to take risks while he maintains the momentum from one end. As he nears the historic 9000-run milestone in the IPL, his fitness is paramount to RCB’s hopes of becoming only the third franchise, joining the ranks of Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, to successfully defend their title.
With a record of two wins and one loss in the 2026 campaign, the Bengaluru-based franchise is currently viewed as a frontrunner for the trophy. However, the potential absence of their most consistent performer over the last several years could significantly alter their tactical approach. The team management will be sweating on the results of medical scans, knowing that their path to back-to-back championships likely depends on Kohli’s availability for the remainder of the season.
