Delhi Capitals are reportedly eyeing veteran wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul as their primary target for the captaincy ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Coming off a stellar individual performance with the bat in IPL 2026, Rahul has put himself at the forefront of the franchise’s plans as they search for a dependable, long-term leader.

KL Rahul to become Delhi Capitals' captain?
This potential leadership overhaul follows a frustrating IPL 2026 campaign for Delhi under the guidance of Axar Patel. The team failed to secure a playoff spot for the fifth consecutive year, ultimately settling for a sixth-place finish. This prolonged postseason drought has forced the management to critically re-evaluate their strategy and captaincy direction before the next tournament kicks off.

A recent report by The Times of India highlights Rahul as the frontrunner for the top job, though the franchise’s hierarchy has not yet locked in a definitive choice. The decision-making process is still in its initial phases, and team management is slated to host a series of strategy meetings over the next few months to finalize their leadership structure.
"It is still early days and the franchise will likely have more discussions on this front in the coming days. KL Rahul is emerging as a strong choice for management, but no decision has been made regarding this," the report stated.
KL Rahul's stellar individual season
KL Rahul silenced his doubters during the IPL 2026 season by adopting a highly aggressive batting style. Anchoring the Delhi Capitals' lineup, the wicketkeeper-batsman amassed 593 runs across 14 innings. He combined consistency with raw power, finishing the tournament with a stellar average of 45.62 and a blistering strike rate of 174.41.

Delhi Capitals' rusty campaign in IPL 2026
Despite Rahul's individual brilliance, DC suffered another deflating tournament, marking their fifth consecutive year without a playoff appearance. They initially showed immense promise, kicking off their campaign with convincing six-wicket victories over both the Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians. However, their early momentum quickly evaporated following a heartbreaking 1-run loss to the Gujarat Titans and a 23-run defeat against Chennai Super Kings.
As the tournament progressed, Delhi managed to secure crucial wins against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals. However, inconsistency plagued the squad. A string of damaging defeats against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and subsequent return-fixture losses to RCB and CSK severely derailed their postseason aspirations.
Too Little, Too Late
The Capitals did manage a spirited late-season surge, closing out their schedule with consecutive victories over Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Kolkata Knight Riders. Unfortunately, this sudden burst of form proved to be too little, too late, as their earlier setbacks had already mathematically eliminated them from the playoff race.
