It was a drama-filled evening in the second ODI between South Africa women and West Indies women as Deandra Dottin's super over heroics saw visitors clinch the game. The contest ended all square in the regular phase as both teams managed to score only 160 runs, thereby ending the contest in a tie. This was the eighth tie in the history of the women's ODI cricket and remarkably the second time in two years between West Indies and South Africa. The super over win saw West Indies take a 1-0 lead in the four-match ODI series after the first ODI ended in no result.
After winning the toss, West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor decided to bowl first. After a 53-run opening stand, the Proteas lost wickets at regular intervals. Laura Wolvaardt (25) and Tazmin Brits (25) were the fulcrum of the batting lineup in the start, supported by skipper Sune Luus in the middle-order.
Luss ended as the top scorer with 46 off 52 deliveries, along with Chloe Tryon (18) and Sinalo Jafta (14) managed to guide the team above 150. The hosts lost wickets at regular intervals and were ultimately dismissed for just 160 in just 40.4 overs. Interestingly, all of West Indies' five bowlers scalped two wickets each to down the Proteas.
It wasn't a different story for the West Indies batters as they faced a torrid time in the middle of the park, with Aybonga Khaka firing on all cylinders. She scalped a fifer and conceded 26 runs in her eight overs (the match was reduced to 41 overs each). Dottin (37) and Taylor (21) took over the initiative when the West Indies were struggling at 83/6. Opener Dottin was the only batter in the match to score with a strike rate over 100.
Chedean Nation (35) and Chinelle Henry (26) were instrumental for the Caribbean team as they led them to a near win. Ultimately, an lbw appeal against Shakera Selman (11) reduced the West Indies side to 160.
Super Over
After the initial affair ended all square, West Indies Women started the Super Over on a high. Two runs on the first ball were followed by two consecutive fours and then a six as Dottin destroyed Shabnim Ismail. She managed to scamper for a three on the penultimate delivery before Hayley Matthews hit a six off the final ball. The West Indies ended with 25/0 with Dottin scoring 19 crucial runs in the super over. This was the most runs scored in a super over in women cricket.
The South African team got to the best possible start as Chloe Tryon started with a six. This was followed by a single and a couple of fours from Brits. With 11 needed off two deliveries, Brits only managed to score a couple followed by her dismissal on the final ball by Matthews. The Proteas managed to score only 17 runs in the super over, as they fell short of the target by nine runs.
The teams will next take the field on Thursday (February 3) as the West Indies lead the series 1-0 with two games to go. Both teams are well in advanced preparation for the upcoming Women's World Cup which starts in the first week of March.
