West Indies’ white-ball captain Shai Hope scripted SA20 history with an unbeaten 118 for Pretoria Capitals against Durban Super Giants on January 7. Hope broke Kyle Verreynne's record for highest individual score by a batter in SA20 history. In response, Jos Buttler put up a fight with an unbeaten 97 but ran out of partners as Lungi Ngidi claimed a hat-trick in the slog overs. Super Giants were bowled out for 186 and lost to Capitals by 18 runs.

Hope gets Capitals past 200

Super Giants skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and opted to bowl first. Hope exploited the fielding restrictions and found boundaries. Capitals were 58 for no loss after powerplay overs. In the 10th over, Hope reached his fifty from 34 balls. Capitals were 85 for no loss at the halfway stage. In the 11th over, David Wiese got the breakthrough. He dismissed Connor Esterhuizen who scored 37 runs from 28 balls. Hope continued to take the aerial route and clear the ropes in the middle overs. In the 17th over, he reached his century from 60 deliveries.

In the final over, Brevis hit another six before falling to Gerald Coetzee. Hope remained unbeaten for 118 as Capitals posted 201/4.

Buttler misses century, Ngidi takes hat-trick

Ngidi conceded just one run in the first over he bowled. His second over was expensive as Kane Williamson and Marques Ackerman hit him for a six each. Chase got the breakthrough after conceding two fours. The Caribbean off-spinner dismissed Ackerman for a 17-ball 27. Lizaad Williams was introduced in the attack and he knocked over Williamson who scored 12 runs from nine balls. Giants were 58/2 after powerplay overs. Skipper Markram could not make an impact. He became Peters' first victim of the night. After 10 overs, Giants were 90/3.

Heinrich Klaasen struggled to get going. Meanwhile, Butter got to his fifty with a six off 30th ball he faced. In the 16th over, Peters struck twice to dismiss Klaasen and Evan Jones. Buttler kept the run chase alive but barely had support from the other end. In the 18th over, Ngidi claimed a hat-trick. He got the wickets of Wiese, Sunil Narine and Coetzee. In the penultimate over, Buttler targeted Williams, hitting two sixes and a four. 18 runs were needed off the final over. Chase bowled two dots to Buttler. On the third and fourth ball, Maphaka and Noor Ahmad were run out respectively trying to get Buttler on strike. With two balls left in the innings, Giants were bowled out for 186. They lost the match by 15 runs. Buttler remained stranded of 97 off 52 balls, featuring nine fours and five sixes.
